Offer Description
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science, and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates, or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.
For the System Behaviour Group of the Laboratory for Reactor Physics and Thermal-Hydraulics, we are looking for a PhD Student for core-wide fuel behavior analysis.
Your Tasks
You will perform research in the area of fuel behavior for light water reactors (LWRs) with a particular focus on developing a methodology for modelling the core-wide fuel behavior. You will collaborate with neutronics and fuel behavior scientists for code usage and development. Newly developed methods and results will be presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. In coordination with the thesis advisor, the student will have the opportunity to be involved in teaching activities.
Your Profile
You have a master’s or equivalent degree in nuclear or mechanical engineering, physics, and/or applied mathematics. You have a solid background in the fundamentals of nuclear engineering, in particular fuel behavior and neutronics. Ideally, you have experience in using fuel behavior codes (FAST, TRANSURANUS, Falcon, etc.). Experience using core follow and core design codes (SIMULATE, NESTLE, PRESTOR, etc.) would also be beneficial. You are a competent programmer and scripter with experience in FORTRAN and scripting languages such as Python. You have an interest in numerical concepts of model order reduction, metamodels, clustering methods, as well as statistical approaches. You are fluent in both spoken and written English.
Additional Information
We Offer:
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture.
