Advanced Ceramic Powder Feedstocks PhD Position
Materials science and technology drive our passion for innovation. Empa's researchers contribute to society's well-being through cutting-edge research, focusing on a future worth living.
The Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics at Empa is dedicated to scientific research, development, and characterization of advanced ceramics, composites, and inorganic powder-based materials for structural and functional applications.
This PhD project focuses on understanding the granulation process and developing advanced ceramic powder feedstocks for dry pressing precision ceramic parts. We aim to investigate the interplay between process-chemistry-powder parameters to overcome issues in shaping operations with industrial partners. At the intersection of fundamental and applied research, we seek to understand how organic additives chemistry and mixture affect process variability and sensitivity, enabling lean and sustainable manufacturing of precision ceramic parts.
The project will involve:
* Formulating slurries suitable for spray granulations
* Investigating the effects of organic additives, their chemistry, and mixture on granulation process parameters and granule performance
* Studying the role of powder type, size, and morphology on the chemistry-process parameter map
* Publishing scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with:
* MSc in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines
* Strong background and interest in organic chemistry
* Analytical skills for materials and data analysis
* Creative scientific mindset
* Full proficiency in written and oral English, French is an asset
* Self-motivated, critical-thinking, open-minded, and communicative, with a strong interest in interdisciplinary research environments
Empa offers a funded PhD position at our Zurich location, working on innovative ceramic shaping processes for industry and societal benefit. Applications are open immediately, with a starting date of April 2025 or upon mutual agreement. The PhD candidate will be co-supervised by Dr. Andrea Testino from PSI.
We foster a culture of inclusion and respect, welcoming individuals passionate about innovative, sustainable, and meaningful activities.
