The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is a leading research institution in natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We conduct cutting-edge research in future technologies, energy, climate, health innovation, and the fundamentals of nature.
We perform fundamental and applied research to provide sustainable solutions for major societal challenges. Our institute is committed to training future generations, with approximately one-quarter of our staff consisting of postdocs, post-graduates, or apprentices.
PhD Student Position
You will contribute to the development of a novel imaging technique, low-energy electron holography, which will be used for atomic-resolution imaging of 2D crystals, such as graphene, and nanocrystalline samples.
Your Key Responsibilities
* Design and build a coherent low-energy electron microscope
* Prepare samples and record holograms
* Numerically reconstruct the sample structure
* Present results at conferences and write papers
Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in physics or engineering
* Strong knowledge of solid-state physics, coherent optics, and theoretical physics (quantum mechanics, QED) is required
* Experience in experimental physics is essential
* Programming skills (Matlab, Python) and experience in electron microscopy and light optical imaging are beneficial
Our Offer
We foster an interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration environment. You will benefit from systematic job training, personal development opportunities, and our pronounced vocational training culture. We support you in combining work and family life or other personal interests with our modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure.
