About the Global Ecosystems Atlas initiative
The Global Ecosystems Atlas (the Atlas) is a flagship open-data initiative under the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), a global partnership of 116 governments and 162 organizations. GEO provides equitable access to Earth observation data—from satellite forest imagery to ocean temperatures—enabling data-driven policies for a more sustainable world. The Atlas delivers high-quality, harmonized spatial ecosystems data essential for corporate ESG, nature-related risk assessment, and alignment with frameworks like TNFD, SBTN, and initiatives like the Nature Positive Initiative.
About the Position
You will lead research on how companies assess nature-related risks and align with sustainability frameworks. Your work will include developing sector-specific use cases that show how the Atlas supports ESG strategies, and contributing to the design of a private-sector event showcasing its applications. This is a strategic, high-impact role ideal for students focused on sustainability, ESG, or nature finance.
Your Role & Responsibilities
Scoping
* Investigate how leading companies currently measure and manage nature-related risks, dependencies, and impacts.
* Understand the alignment of these corporate practices with TNFD, SBTN, and other reporting frameworks (e.g., Bloomberg ESG indices).
* Identify shared data needs and existing gaps where the Global Ecosystems Atlas could play a decisive role.
Use Cases
* Develop 6-7 industry-specific case studies (e.g., finance, trading, infrastructure, textiles) to illustrate how the Atlas can inform risk assessments, due diligence, and nature positive strategies.
* Highlight linkages to state-of-nature metrics (Nature Positive Initiative), science-based land and freshwater targets (SBTN), and nature finance instruments.
Strategic Engagement
* Provide a clear roadmap for how the Atlas can become a go-to resource for corporate ESG teams, investors, and sustainability officers.
* Recommend strategies to align with and support ongoing efforts in the Nature Positive Initiative, TNFD, SBTN, and related policy or financial coalitions.
Event Preparation
* Co-develop an event concept to showcase emerging best practices and opportunities for corporate engagement with the Atlas.
* Identify potential private-sector speakers, industry partners, and thought leaders in nature finance, nature-positive frameworks, and biodiversity metrics.
* Align event objectives with broader summits or forums to ensure maximum visibility and synergy with existing nature-positive efforts.
Deliverables
* Landscape Analysis Report (Weeks 1–3)
* Mapping the Current Landscape: Based on a selected sample size, document how businesses and investors integrate ecosystem data into decision-making.
* Framework Alignment: Analyze how TNFD, SBTN, and the Nature Positive Initiative’s metrics influence data requirements and corporate reporting.
* Opportunities and Gaps: Identify unaddressed needs in corporate data and measurement practices that the Atlas can fulfill.
* Sector-Specific Use Cases (Weeks 4–6)
* 6-7 Use Cases showing how companies across diverse sectors can embed Atlas data into material risk assessments, supply-chain due diligence, sustainability KPIs, and nature positive target setting.
* Technical and Strategic Fit: Outline the specific Atlas data layers, methods, or tools that businesses would find most valuable.
* Strategic Engagement Recommendations (Weeks 7–9)
* Engagement Strategy: Propose how to position the Atlas as a premier data source for nature finance and corporate sustainability.
* Initiative Linkages: Suggest points of collaboration or partnership with the Nature Positive Initiative, SBTN, TNFD, and other key organizations shaping the private sector’s approach to biodiversity.
* Event Concept and Outreach Plan (Weeks 10–12)
* Event Blueprint: Develop a concept note and high-level agenda for an event highlighting private-sector applications of the Atlas.
* Stakeholder Mapping: Identify speakers, panelists, and key private-sector participants.
* Communications Alignment: Ensure the event resonates with broader dialogues on nature finance, accountability, and nature-based metrics.
