Job Description
About Us
We are seeking a highly motivated mechanical engineer to design the longest ultra-high vacuum system ever built. The ideal candidate will have a solid technical background and experience in mechanical and structural design.
The Vacuum, Surfaces, and Coatings (VSC) Group is at the forefront of CERN's pioneering technological research, overseeing all high and ultra-high vacuum systems across the CERN accelerators. We handle everything from design to operation, surface engineering to acceptance tests.
Responsibilities
1. Design the ultra-high vacuum system for the Future electron-positron Circular Collider (FCCee) storage rings and booster, including vacuum chambers and interconnections;
2. Contribute to the development of vacuum technologies required for the FCCee, including thermal spray, additive manufacturing, shape-memory-alloy implementation and new welding techniques;
3. Define and carry out characterisation tests to assess new technical solutions; Design, produce and assemble prototypes and their test benches;
4. Test materials for compatibility with vacuum environments, including leak detection and outgassing rate measurements;
5. Lead and actively participate in the design, manufacturing and installation of FCCee vacuum system mock-ups;
6. Play an active role in multidisciplinary projects, requiring close collaboration with teams in charge of other accelerator systems and engineering fields.
Requirements
* Masters degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.
* Proven experience in:
o Finite element methods for nonlinear, static and dynamic, thermal and mechanical analysis.conceptual design of complex and multidisciplinary systems;
o Carrying out technical design of complex systems and in leading development and prototyping studies;
o 3D mechanical design and in drafting 2D technical production drawings;
o Preparing scientific documentation, technical notes and reports for complex systems.
* Knowledge of:
o Vacuum systems, surface treatments and thin-film coatings for ultra-high vacuum applications;
o Materials, including shape memory alloys, for ultra-high vacuum applications.
Skills and Competencies
* Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: by ISO dimensioning and tolerancing;
* Knowledge and application of materials, surface and thermal treatments for UHV;
* Knowledge and application of leak detection techniques and equipment;
* Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in fluid mechanics and/or heat transfer.
Personal Qualities
* Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities
* Communicating Effectively: providing others with timely information Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented
* Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements Readily accepting new tasks or work/projects
* Demonstrating Accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises
Languages
Spoken and written English in professional contexts and the willingness to learn French.
