The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is seeking a dynamic Head of Core Infrastructure Engineering to lead and inspire our core infrastructure engineering team.
This role is based in Basel, Switzerland; however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.
Purpose of the role:
The Bank for International Settlements’ mission is to support central banks' pursuit of monetary and financial stability through international partnership and to act as a bank for central banks.
You will play a crucial role in this mission by leading the team responsible for our core infrastructure platforms and systems. Additionally, you will ensure operational excellence, contribute to the Bank's technology strategy, and represent your team to IT leadership and across the entire organization.
By joining the Infrastructure team, you will:
1. Lead a collaborative team: Lead an experienced team of infrastructure engineering experts and strategically align their skills with the Bank's long-term technology vision.
2. Be a catalyst for innovation: Play a pivotal role in the Bank's technology transformation and innovation projects, driving forward-thinking infrastructure initiatives that impact the entire organization.
3. Embrace cutting-edge technologies: Guide your team in adopting hybrid cloud technologies and leveraging automation to enhance efficiencies and modernize our infrastructure.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Leadership and Team Management: Oversee and empower the team, fostering collaboration and a culture of continuous improvement. Plan training and development programs, conduct performance reviews, manage HR administration, and coordinate the procurement and management of contract staff. Ensure the team's work consistently meets the highest professional standards and aligns with both Bank and ITS policies.
2. Resilience: Ensure activities adhere to the Bank's high security standards, corporate policies, release and change management, and compliance. Incorporate resilience practices to protect and sustain solutions during times of adversity.
3. Technology Strategy: Develop and implement a long-term strategy and roadmap for your area in collaboration with ITS leadership. Ensure the strategy is communicated effectively to the team and endorsed by management.
4. Core Infrastructure Engineering and Operations: Lead the development and operations of core infrastructure platforms used by the Bank. Ensure systems and services meet the highest standards of reliability, performance, and security, supporting the Bank's strategic objectives and operational needs.
5. Liaison Role: Proactively liaise with all relevant collaborators, particularly within BIS customer departments, as well as management, technical staff, external partners, and providers.
6. Representation and Management Support: Actively participate in relevant ITS Management Team meetings, assist with the overall management of ITS and its staff, and represent ITS in various meetings and committees.
Qualifications, skills, and experience:
1. Broad experience working within engineering and operational support teams within a core infrastructure environment.
2. Knowledge of infrastructure technologies, including networks, compute, storage, databases, virtualization, Linux, and container platforms.
3. Proven track record of ensuring high standards of reliability, performance, and security for infrastructure systems and services.
4. Strong understanding of IT security standards, resilience practices, and compliance with corporate policies.
5. Ability to develop and implement long-term technology strategies and roadmaps in alignment with organizational goals.
6. Experience in representing IT functions in management meetings and committees, and providing overall management support.
7. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders, including management, technical staff, and external partners.
8. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.
