A Research Scientist in the Discovery group of the Fragrance Division is a unique role in leading and developing our perfume ingredient portfolio using skills in synthetic organic chemistry obtained in high-level education at renowned academic institutions.
We are looking for middle to senior candidates willing to work with multiple S&T laboratories in Zürich and Shanghai and with Givaudan's perfume creation and regulatory teams. You will implement research programs in organic synthesis to identify performing and sustainable odorants for the Fragrance Industry, according to our goals and corporate strategy.
You will be based in our Innovation Center in Kemptthal and reporting directly to the Head of Discovery.
In this exciting role you will:
Design new classes of fragrance molecules taking multiple success parameters into account (activity, safety, environmental impact, economic)
Lead a chemistry laboratory to implement the synthesis and evaluation of new molecule candidates and analogues
Collaborate with chemists and experienced technicians to ensure the team's highest scientific quality
Present results and share acquired knowledge to technical staff and business leadership in oral and written form.
Keep up-to-date with the chemical literature and fragrance patent landscape and transform ideas into new products and allowing synthetic routes
Learn to understand the need of perfumers: you will develop your skills to translate odor descriptions into chemical structures and to build your own qualitative and quantitative structure-odor correlations
Your professional profile includes:
A Ph.D. in organic chemistry or catalysis with a background in preparative organic methods and associated analytical techniques
1+ years of experience in an academic or industrial laboratory
Optionally 3+ years of industrial experience in small-molecule development projects in life-sciences
Enthusiastic about solving chemical problems and the discovery of novel products or processes
As an advantage are strong publication record
Passionate to work toward chemical innovation including demonstrating proof of principle at the bench
In-depth knowledge of analytical methods (NMR, GC/MS, LCMS, IR) to unequivocally interpret chemical structures and gain reaction understanding
Of advantage familiarity with automation and parallel synthesis
A very good command of English oral and written is mandatory; as an asset fluency in German or French
Open, constructive, enthusiastic for chemistry, creative team-player
Eager to try new things where little precedence is available
