Position Title: University Counselor
Department: Office of Student Life
Reports to: Associate Dean of Student Life
Overall Responsibilities:
The University Counselor serves as the initial point of contact for students seeking mental health support. They conduct initial triage assessments to determine students' needs and facilitate referrals to appropriate mental health professionals within the local community. The Counselor plays a crucial role in connecting students with relevant psychological services and ensuring they receive timely support.
Counselor’s Key Areas of Responsibility:
1. Conducts initial meetings with students to assess their mental health needs and determine the appropriate course of action.
2. Refers students to external mental health professionals for specialized care, including therapy, psychiatric evaluations, and crisis intervention.
3. Develops and maintains a network of local mental health providers to ensure a broad range of available support services.
4. Assists faculty and staff in understanding and supporting students with mental health concerns.
5. Provides guidance and training to Resident Assistants, Academic Mentors, Orientation Mentors, and Peer Educators on recognizing mental health crises and accessing appropriate resources.
6. Consults with student leaders and staff regarding individual student concerns and helps develop response strategies.
7. Meets with parents, virtually and in person, to discuss their student’s mental health needs and available resources.
8. Coordinates a schedule of active and passive mental health awareness programs each semester in collaboration with other staff.
9. Provides training to staff members and student leaders on identifying and responding to mental health emergencies.
10. Responds to mental health emergencies, including out of hours, in order to help students and members of the Franklin community be as safe and healthy as possible.
11. Evaluates at-risk students to determine their stability and ability to participate in academic and campus life.
12. Acts as a liaison between students, mental health providers, families, and university stakeholders in cases of student hospitalization for mental health reasons, managing their transition and aftercare upon discharge.
13. Maintains records and statistics to track student needs and inform university mental health initiatives.
14. Serves on the Behavioral Intervention Team and other university committees as appropriate.
This role is designed to ensure students receive prompt, effective, and appropriate mental health support while fostering a campus environment that prioritizes well-being.
