Menhir Photonics is a Swiss laser manufacturer offering laser solutions of unprecedented robustness and reliability to customers around the globe. Based in Zurich, Switzerland, our team has strong expertise in the development and production of ultrafast lasers for the markets of aerospace, telecom, and metrology. For our ambitious business scale-up we are looking for an R&D Laser Engineer .
Tasks You will work in the laser development department with a focus on product development, testing, prototyping and supply chain. You will closely interact with other functions of the company such as Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, and the Management Team to continuously improve the laser products and transfer them to production. Your responsibilities include:
Laser design work on our MENHIR-1030 and MENHIR-1550 products
Optical design of ultrafast laser systems
Design and procurement of customized optical components
Coordination of the mechanical and electronic product engineering
Prototyping, testing, and manufacturing of newly developed lasers
Transferring the developed systems to our production team
Responsibility for design optimization to increase manufacturability
Reliability and environmental testing
Management of R&D projects
Managing development projects for lasers and applications
Communication with all stakeholders
Reporting results to the Management Team
Further responsibilities
Collaborating with the R&D team to maintain standards in the design procedure
Specification and quality testing of individual optical componentsDefining, managing, and securing the supply chain for critical components through detailed procurement specifications
Requirements Your background:
You have a Physics or Engineering PhD or Master's Degree with equivalent work experience in the laser industry in the field of ultrafast lasers (fs and ps)
You bring know-how about laser assembly including experience with working under cleanroom conditions
Experience in free space optics design with a focus on the development of ultrafast lasers and amplifiers
Experience with the RP-Photonics simulation software package is a plus
You are a team player and like working in a dynamic team in a fast-growing business environment
You are willing to take responsibility, work independently, and approach problems in an analytical way
Willingness to occasionally travel to visit partners
Fluent knowledge of English is mandatory, German is a plus

The position is 80–100% (34-42 hours/week)

As we are looking to fill two R&D Laser Engineer positions, the preferred starting dates are as soon as possible and July 2025
