PhD Student in Anatomical and Dosimetric Impacts of Upright Radiotherapy
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

Your tasks
We are offering a fully funded 3 years PhD position within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network - UPLIFT, focusing on upright radiotherapy (RT)—a transformative approach to radiation treatment. This position (DC17) will investigate how anatomical and dosimetric differences between upright and conventional supine treatment positions impact radiotherapy planning and clinical implementation. Your main tasks will be:
* Acquire and analyze upright and supine imaging data (MR/CT) across multiple anatomical sites (head & neck, thorax, upper and lower abdomen).
* Develop tools and quantify anatomical variations and organ motion linked to posture.
* Define robust proton/photon planning criteria and margin recipes via systematic dosimetric comparisons.
* Generate an open, curated dataset to support clinical research and AI algorithm development.
You can find the overview of the UPLIFT consortium here Home - Uplift (uplift-project.eu)
Your profile
* Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related fields.
* Strong interest in radiotherapy, image analysis, and translational research.
* Proven experience in medical image analysis (image registration/segmentation, 4D motion modeling) and deep learning frameworks development is highly preferred.
* Excellent communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
You will be matriculated at the ETH Zurich.
You must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date.
We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture.
