Job Description: The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our around 1,400 employees work for a sustainable, economical, safe and socially fair energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our research priorities of energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, spin-off companies and global cooperation, we shape the sustainable transformation of the energy system.
Would you like to actively help shape the energy transition and gain practical experience during your studies? With us, you'll work in a dynamic, motivated team on a pioneering topic in the field of renewable energies. Our department "Sustainable Synthesis Products" deals with converting "green" hydrogen from renewable electricity into sustainable synthesis products. These synthesis products can be used as energy carriers for efficient energy transport and storage. Additionally, sustainable synthesis products are necessary for defossilizing the chemical industry and applications requiring high energy densities - such as aviation. In the team "Synthesis Products - System Analysis and Assessment", we analyze the techno-economic and ecological impacts of the production, storage, transport, and use of sustainable synthesis products.
The focus of the advertised master's thesis is the analysis of critical materials in Power-to-X (PtX) pathways concerning the use of renewable energies, a comprehensive life cycle analysis (LCA), and the development of a dynamic indicator for evaluating future scenarios.
For our team "Synthesis Products - System Analysis and Assessment", we are looking for a student assistant to start as soon as possible, with the opportunity to write a Master thesis.
What you will do
You will research the current state of knowledge on assessing material needs in life cycle assessments.
You will develop a method for assessing material needs based on material prices.
You will use and develop tools for data analysis and modeling, particularly with Python.
Your tasks will include not only modeling but also sourcing global material prices.
You will implement your method into the Python-based software "Brightway".
You will test and validate your method through an exemplary case study, considering scenarios in the context of the energy transition.
You will present your results in our department and possibly at further meetings and write your master's thesis on this topic.
What you bring to the table
You are enrolled in a course in engineering, business administration, industrial engineering, energy and environmental technology, sustainability management, or a comparable field.
You have an interest in topics such as the energy transition, renewable energies, and sustainable technologies.
You have knowledge in life cycle assessment (LCA) and material analyses, or you wish to delve deeper into these areas.
Familiarity with working with "Brightway" or "Premise", the LCA tools, is helpful but not required.
You have excellent knowledge and practical experience in Python programming, as well as in the use of data analysis and modeling tools.
You are proficient in using Python, particularly libraries like NumPy.
You work independently and structured, are motivated, and a reliable team player.
You can express yourself confidently in German or English.
What you can expect
Exclusive insight: By working together with the scientists in our department, you will gain insights into the day-to-day research and development work at a research institute.
Research mix: You will have the opportunity to combine experimental work with theory, thus applying and expanding the knowledge you gained during your studies.
Supervision: You will be supervised by scientists during your work and receive feedback on your progress.
Teamwork: You will gain experience in working in a team with our scientific and student staff and can contribute the experience you have already gained.
Working hours and location: We offer you the opportunity to flexibly adjust your working hours to your needs and to occasionally work from home.
Equal opportunities: We value equal opportunities and embrace diversity.
After work: Celebrate yourself and your colleagues at after-work events or our annual employee parties.
In addition to the thesis, a contract as a research assistant is agreed. Remuneration is based on the level of your university degree.
We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
Have we piqued your interest? Then apply online now with your detailed application documents (including cover letter, CV, reference/performance record). We look forward to getting to know you!
