The Lucerne School of Computer Science and Information Technology is the country's first department at a university of applied sciences dedicated to computer science. We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our interdisciplinary research team at the intersection of artificial intelligence and clinical dermatology. Our goal is to develop and evaluate novel AI-driven approaches to support and enhance dermatological care, while ensuring that clinicians can understand and trust these systems. The project is a collaboration between the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the University Hospital of Basel, and the University of Basel.

Tasks and job requirements
* Curate large-scale dermatological image collections for visual representation learning addressing issues of data quality, diversity, and clinical relevance
* Interpret clinical concepts with visual representations
* Develop XAI decision support systems
* Design and conduct multi-centric clinical evaluations
Your profile
* A Master's degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field, with excellent academic credentials
* Strong background in machine learning and computer vision. Previous experience with XAI, self-supervised learning, multimodal models, diffusion models, or hyperbolic learning is an advantage
* Experience working with medical data and/or healthcare projects is highly desired. Previous exposure to dermatology or other clinical fields is a plus
* Advanced programming skills, including experience in writing efficient and clean code, and familiarity with modern AI frameworks
* Ability to handle complex datasets, from preprocessing to model training and evaluation
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team, interacting with clinicians, and fellow researchers
* Proficiency in English (oral and written); knowledge of other languages, in particular German, is an asset
