The Environmental Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring that all procedures to prevent pollution are understood and implemented by the crew, while adhering to MARPOL regulations regarding waste handling and disposal.
Key Responsibilities
1. The Officer reports any misalignment or non-compliance related to environmental protection directly to the Master, as well as ensures the correct application of the company's environmental policy.
2. Garbage is managed correctly, gathered, and disposed of in accordance with MARPOL regulations, national, local legislation, and Company policy. The Officer assists shipboard personnel and authorized companies during operational garbage disposal.
3. Proper management of wastewater and effluent external sampling tests is ensured, according to Company instructions; results are filed and reported on board through the Company.
4. The Officer ensures that the Company Policy regarding Air Emission Management is followed, defining the working schedule of the incinerator and the use of the food waste system discharge, according to international, local rules, and Company procedures.
5. In cooperation with the Safety Officer, the Officer performs environmental training for all crew members, ensuring they are trained on Chemical Safety as per Company policy and Chemical Management Manual.
6. The Officer ensures that all external companies and their technicians, once on board, are aware of the Environmental Company policy and relevant procedures to efficiently cope with situations that may cause pollution.
7. Together with the Safety Officer, the Officer coordinates and directs monthly Pollution Emergency drills, assists the Staff Captain with any Environmental findings following inspections/audits internal and external.
8. The Officer cooperates with the 1st Officer on the performance of the Risk Assessment, supporting him regarding environmental aspects compliance.
9. The Officer carries out periodic inspections of all safety and environmental protection appliances and equipment, which must be properly maintained at all times.
10. The Officer updates all environmental logbooks and plans, ensuring correct recordkeeping and filling out by the respective shipboard personnel. An environmental schedule for the voyage is provided, verifying that all environmental restrictions in the ship's area of operation have been included in the voyage plan, and ensuring the correct application of the Company Policies.
Minimum Requirements
1. Fluent in oral and written English, the working & safety language of the Company.
2. An Environmental / Science-based bachelor's degree or higher, with successful completion of EO Company training.
3. STCW 95 Compliance with the requirements of STCW 95 regarding certification for this position.
4. A complete knowledge of MARPOL, Garbage Management Plan, Chemical Management Plan, and ISO 14001/50001.
5. BASIC knowledge of Windows-based programs.
6. A recognized medical certification is required.
7. The ability to work in a harmonious productive team environment.
8. Meets the requirements of the laws of the Flag State of the ship regarding health & physical requirements.
9. Extensive experience in a similar position within MSC or other Cruise company.
