PhD Student Position
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is a leading research institute in Switzerland, focusing on natural and engineering sciences. We conduct cutting-edge research in various fields, including future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation, and the fundamentals of nature.
This research aims to provide sustainable solutions for pressing challenges facing society, science, and the economy. As part of our commitment to training future generations, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates, or apprentices.
We currently employ 2300 people at PSI.
Your Responsibilities
* You will contribute to developing a novel imaging technique, low-energy electron holography, which will be applied for atomic-resolution imaging of 2D crystals, such as graphene, and nanocrystalline samples like individual macromolecules.
The project entails several key tasks:
* Designing and building a coherent low-energy electron microscope
* Preparing samples and recording holograms
* Numerically reconstructing the sample structure
* Presenting results at conferences and writing papers
Requirements
* A Master's degree in physics or engineering
* Strong knowledge of solid-state physics, coherent optics, and theoretical physics (quantum mechanics, QED)
* Experience in experimental physics
* Programming skills (Matlab, Python) and experimental experience in electron microscopy and light optical imaging are highly desirable
What We Offer
Our institution values interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and dynamic teamwork. You will have access to systematic job training, personal development opportunities, and a strong vocational training culture.
We aim to support you in combining work and family life or other personal interests through our modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure.
