Job Description Summary
The Translational Immunology group within the Translational Medicine/Preclinical Safety Department in Basel, Switzerland is looking for a highly motivated scientist to join our interdisciplinary team.
Our group supports all phases of the drug development from target validation, lead optimization, clinical profiling, drug registration and beyond. We focus on the safety assessment of compounds aiming to de-risk potential immunosafety liabilities prior to human studies and to elucidate the mechanistic basis of immunotoxicities observed in either non-clinical or clinical studies.
The Research Scientist will support in vitro experimentation using both preclinical models and samples derived from clinical trials. The studies will utilize state-of-the-art technologies and will provide an ideal environment for professional development while contributing to the development of safe and efficient medicines for patients in need.
Job Description
* Use a variety of complementary methods and readouts, in a variety of functional in vitro and ex vivo human and/or animal immune system assays, to assess the safety and efficacy of drug development compounds.
* Perform the isolation, handling, culturing (days to weeks) and differentiation of primary leukocytes (T cells, Monocytes, NK Cells etc) from different tissues and different species (human, rat, mouse, non-human primate etc) for use in in vitro assays.
* Perform technical procedures necessary to execute a range of in vitro cell biology techniques (e.g. multicolour flow cytometry, multiplex ELISA, live cell imaging etc) in the course of conducting functional immune system assays (e.g. Fc effector function assessment, immune cell activation assays, cytokine release assays, immunophenotyping etc).
* Data analysis, biostatistics and graphical representation of often large, multi-parametric datasets for reports and presentations.
* Assist in the preparation of study protocols, reports and presentations, and has the ability to communicate results within cross-functional teams.
* Provide quality testing, result verification and rigorous documentation practices while displaying thorough scientific judgement, and communicate results and interpretations in an accurate and timely manner.
* Display competence in the use of electronic data collection systems (e.g. Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN)).
* Assist in method development and validation of new methodologies and instrumentation as needed.
* Interact in cross-functional and cross-divisional teams supporting projects spanning our entire drug development pipeline.
Essential:
* Apprenticeship, bachelor or master’s degree in immunology, cell biology.
* Research Scientist I: 1-3 years of experience working in a laboratory in the pharmaceutical industry or academia.
* Research Scientist II: 3-5 years of experience working in a laboratory in the pharmaceutical industry or academia.
* Proficient in a variety of cell biology laboratory methods including cell culture of primary immune cells.
* Proficient in the design and conductance of multi-colour flow cytometry experiments. Good knowledge of flow cytometry analysis software (e.g. FlowJo, OMIQ) is required.
* Fluency in English with the ability to communicate data and ideas within large and small teams.
* Research Scientist I: Familiarity handling large, multi-parametric data sets for reports and presentations.
* Research Scientist II: Demonstrable experience handling large, multi-parametric data sets for reports and presentations. Bioinformatics experience and knowledge of R would be advantageous.
* Ability to learn and combine new techniques and concepts to perform exploratory activities at risk.
* Strong motivation and ability to work independently, good record keeping with an aptitude to work collaboratively within different cross-functional teams.
* Scientific curiosity, initiative, commitment, flexibility, and good organizational skills.
* Nice to have - Experience with mouse and rat handling, diverse application methods and necropsy skills (ideally holding a LTK1 or equivalent certificate).
Candidates with a PhD/MD will not be considered for this position.
