We take great pride in our vast range of chemical and biochemical products, and our high standards can only be maintained through great people who share our values and desire to do the very best job possible every day.
Purpose of the Job
Carrying out organic synthesis ranging from route finding on laboratory scale up to multi-kilogram production.
Role and Responsibilities
* Carrying out organic synthesis ranging from route finding on laboratory scale up to multi-kilogram production in 2 to 60 L reactors in the kilo-lab.
* Optimization of chemical reactions under guidance - including workup and product isolation - with regards to scalability.
* Monitoring reaction conversion and performing compound analysis using TLC, LC/MS, NMR.
* Purification of products via crystallization, distillation, (automated) column chromatography or prep-HPLC.
* Superuser of dedicated equipment or technology, including maintenance, contact with suppliers, and instruction of other group members.
* Planning of daily practical work in discussion with the responsible Scientist.
* Performing general lab duties and maintaining a high standard of order and cleanliness.
* Accurate, detailed, and regular documentation of experimental work using an electronic lab journal.
* Supervising an apprentice, trainee, or junior team members.
Candidate Requirements
* Apprenticeship as laboratory technician, specialized in organic synthesis.
* Previous experience of working in a similar role.
* Consistently strong performance over several years with regards to output, quality, and behaviors.
* Role model for younger technicians in all professional and personal aspects (“lead by example”).
* Experience in preparative organic synthesis to carry out reactions on different scales according to known procedures.
* Experienced user of reactor sizes (2 to 20 L) and scale-up equipment is an advantage (nutsch filters, charcoal device, solid handling room, etc.).
* Experienced in the handling of hazardous chemistry on scale in the Kilolab (e.g., inert transfer of flammable solvents & pyrophoric reagents, dealing with the release of highly flammable gases, etc.) is an advantage.
* Mastered the use of different isolation/purification techniques such as crystallization, distillation, (automated) column chromatography, or prep-HPLC.
* Hands-on attitude and positive mindset (“play to win”).
* Willingness to go the extra mile by learning new techniques and accepting additional responsibilities.
* Resilient when faced with challenges and resistant to time pressure.
* Ability to plan and accurately document practical work.
* Safety-first attitude, compliance with process safety best practices.
* Desire to solve complex, synthetic challenges on scale.
* Open communication and team-working skills.
* Command of spoken and written English is desired.
* Good computer skills in MS software.
