About HERMES
HERMES is ARIS’s first-ever bi-liquid rocketry project, aiming to design, build, and launch a cutting-edge launch vehicle in October 2025. This ambitious endeavor is supported by the development of a fully student-researched-and-developed (SRAD) EthaLOx engine and advanced engineering systems. The project is driven by innovation, teamwork, and the goal of competing in Europe’s premier rocketry competition, EuRoC.
Semester Project/Bachelor Thesis: Payload Design for HERMES I
The Payload Design for HERMES I project is meant to be handled by a single master’s student or a small group of bachelor students as part of their studies and is a unique opportunity to develop the scientific payload for ARIS’s first bi-liquid rocket. This payload will take the form of a 3U CubeSat (100x100x300mm) integrated within the nosecone of the rocket. The payload must be entirely self-contained, with power autonomy, and meet the weight requirement of <2kg, ensuring alignment with EuRoC standards.
This is a critical subsystem of the rocket, providing functional payload capacity that complies with EuRoC’s independent payload functionality requirements while being directly attached to the nosecone through structural interfacing.
The Project
Your role will involve:
* Designing a lightweight, functional 3U CubeSat that operates autonomously within the defined volume, mass constraints and imposed requirements by the HERMES System Engineers.
* Ensuring the payload’s electrical power system is fully self-sustaining, with no external connections to the rocket’s power or data systems.
* Collaborating with the Structures Subsystem team to develop robust structutal interfaces for secure integration within the nosecone.
* Developing payload functionalities that demonstrate innovation, practicality, or scientific value, aligning with EuRoC guidelines.
* Conducting structural, thermal, and electrical analyses to ensure payload reliability under launch conditions.
* Preparing detailed documentation and design reviews to present progress at key project milestones, including a payload PDR (Preliminary Design Review), CDR (Critical Design Review) and be part of the HERMES FRR (Flight Readiness Review).
You will be responsible for finding a suitable supervising professor or advisor for your project. The HERMES Management Team will assist you in identifying potential supervisors and facilitating connections with relevant faculty.
What You Should Bring
* Background in Mechanical Engineering,Electrical Engineering or Physics.
* Interest in payload design, autonomous systems, and space systems engineering.
* Familiarity with CAD tools for structural design and simulation.
* Basic knowledge of electrical systems and power autonomy design.
* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
