PhD Position in Artificial Photosynthesis: The Yao Group at the Department of Chemistry, University of Basel, is offering a fully funded PhD position in the innovative field of Artificial Photosynthesis, supported by the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI). This interdisciplinary project explores artificial photosynthesis at sub-zero temperatures within cryo-protective lipidic mesophase nanoconfinement, aiming to develop novel strategies for efficient artificial photosynthesis under extreme conditions with potential applications in sustainable energy and environmental technologies.

Research Area: Artificial Photosynthesis in Nanoconfinement
Location: University of Basel, with regular stays at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, or a related field .
Strong academic track record and research experience.
Background in physical chemistry, preferably in photochemistry, biophysics, and materials characterization.
Experience with CO2 fixation and nanoconfinement is advantageous.
Proficiency in advanced analytical methods such as spectroscopy, scattering, and microscopy.
Excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, motivation, self-management, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Job Description:
Conduct experimental research on artificial photosynthesis in nanoconfinement.
Utilize scattering, spectroscopy, microscopy, and other analytical techniques to investigate photochemical and photophysical processes.
Collaborate with researchers at the University of Basel and PSI, contributing to interdisciplinary projects.
Present research findings at international conferences and publish results in high-impact scientific journals.
