Job Description: Introduction
The Engineering Department (EN-EL) is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and works on the CERN electrical network. Within the Electrical Group, you will join the Electrical Project Management Section (EPM), which is responsible for managing projects related to CERN’s electrical transmission and distribution network and powering future accelerators.
Functions
As an Electrical Engineer, you will support the mission of the group EN-EL, mainly taking part in the studies of the electrical network and infrastructure of the next flagship accelerator of CERN, the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Your tasks will include:
Define requirements with users;
Develop the electrical infrastructure for each facility of the accelerator starting from the conceptual study, defining distribution schemes, failure scenarios, and backup solutions. Contribute to the study for a potential deployment of energy storage, grid control, FACTS, DC grids;
Develop and use numerical models of the HV, MV, and LV networks of the accelerator to perform the studies;
Participate in the definition of the connections with the national electrical grids;
Perform surveys and measures on CERN existing electrical systems (surface and underground) to retrieve information useful for the studies;
Define the cost estimate of the proposed technical solutions;
Define and review the requirements of the electrical systems regarding space occupation and civil works;
Monitor project progress, ensuring quality, adherence to plans, and deliverables, and report regularly to management;
Manage scope, planning, budget, risks, and coordinate internal teamwork;
Prepare tenders, contracts, and oversee contractors.
Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electrical Engineering or a related field.
Experience:
Demonstrated experience in studies of large electrical projects such as electrical substations or industrial installations, both high and low voltage;
Experience in the technical analysis of electrical grids and networks;
Experience in contractor management and/or team coordination;
Design and modelling of high-voltage electrical circuits and networks;
Design and modelling of low-voltage electrical circuits and networks;
Theoretical and practical knowledge of high voltage and low voltage systems and equipment;
Building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships;
Ensuring that information, procedures, and decisions are appropriately documented;
Demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to accept changing circumstances;
Assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues, and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely.
Spoken and written English: ability to understand and speak in professional contexts. Ability to draw up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. Ability to understand and speak, or willingness to learn and improve French.
