The Patent Attorney will be responsible for developing and executing IP Strategies that align with the company’s business goals. This role encompasses overseeing the protection, management and enforcement of the company’s IP assets, managing IP litigation and ensuring compliance with IP laws and regulations. The Patent Attorney has a scientific and technical background (degree in chemistry, pharmacy or pharmaceutical technology), a solid understanding of the pharmaceutical products and development, and the ability to work closely with R&D, business development, and other teams to align IP initiatives with the company’s innovation and commercial goals. You will be supported by IP manager and two paralegals. This is an in-house role where collaboration and a solution-oriented approach is needed.
Key Responsibilities
* Working closely with technical teams (R&D) to spot patentable inventions;
* Work closely with CSO and IP Manager to optimize IP protection;
* Working with legal counsel and IP manager on reviewing licensing agreements;
* Identify key IP opportunities and threats and provide strategic advice to senior management;
* Collaborate with external patent attorneys;
* Conducting thorough searches to determine the novelty and non-obviousness of our inventions, products, science, processes, services;
* Conducting research on existing patents and scientific literature to support patent applications;
* Assessing the patent landscape for potential infringement risks or opportunities;
* Know-how in collecting invention disclosures and conducting patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses;
Drafting, Filing and Protecting IP
* Preparing, drafting and filing patent applications, including detailed descriptions and technical drawings;
* Responding to Office Actions and addressing any objections or requests for additional information from patent offices;
* Representing the company in court cases involving patent disputes;
Qualifications
* Fully qualified US or European patent attorney with a minimum of 7 years of experience within pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries.
* Degree in scientific disciplines, preferably chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacy or pharmaceutical technology.
* Experience in formulation development (even at university during the course of degree) is a plus.
* PhD in pharmaceutics-related sciences is a plus.
* Experience working in-house is a plus.
