Job Description
Your responsibilities
As a member of the "Infrastructure, Integration and Installation" team within the AWAKE project, you will support the team both with your technical engineering skills, and your communication and organisational skills. You will also contribute to the CNGS target area dismantling project (CTD), whose deliverables are prerequisites to the start of AWAKE installation.
Within the AWAKE and CTD projects, you will be part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team of young, competent and enthusiastic physicists, engineers and technicians.
You will familiarise yourself with the environment and processes of the AWAKE and CTD projects and their equipment, service, and infrastructure experts. This includes on-site visits in the underground AWAKE and CNGS tunnels. Work in the tunnel will continue to be a part of your work (~10%), as you will follow up on, and participate in, the dismantling and installation works on-site.
Engineering & Integration:
* You will be a driving force for the integration, installation and infrastructure studies and works for AWAKE.
* You will collect information from AWAKE equipment experts (laser, electron source, magnets, plasma cells, etc.) regarding their future installation in the dismantled CNGS target area, as well as the infrastructure and installation requirements.
* You will discuss the requirements with infrastructure experts (HVAC, cabling, access system, shielding, etc.) to ensure they can design the infrastructure needed.
* You will perform integration, installation and infrastructure studies, with the help of a dedicated design office and the relevant experts.
* With the support of CERN safety experts, you will assess safety (general and radiological) already in the design and integration steps, and ensure that CERN's safety rules are respected, both during the installation and operation of AWAKE.
* With the SPS integration team, you will actively participate in dedicated integration meetings for AWAKE and follow up with the AWAKE experts to ensure that the installation phase (early 2027) will be well prepared.
Planning & Coordination:
* For the CTD works (2026), you will update the existing planning where relevant and be the link person between the CTD on-site coordinator and the SPS facility coordinator.
* For the AWAKE installation works, you will collect input from AWAKE stakeholders to develop, follow up on and document the AWAKE installation planning.
* Furthermore, you will follow up on the on-site activities (2027-2028) in line with the planning, and address coactivity where necessary, all while ensuring CERN's general and radiological safety rules are respected.
Your profile:
Skills:
* Effective problem solving;
* Working in complex environments and situations;
* Stakeholder management across disciplines;
* Accountability and ownership of tasks;
* Self-management and organization;
* Excellent verbal and written communication;
* Experience with 3D CAD software (e.g. CATIA) and planning tools (e.g. MS Project) would be an asset;
* Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
Eligibility criteria:
* You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State .
* You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
o a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on
