About the International Respiratory Coalition (IRC) The IRC was founded by multisectoral partners in 2021 – this includes the professional respiratory community, patient-focused organisations and the pharmaceutical industry. Led by the European Respiratory Society (ERS), the Coalition has an overarching vision: to advance the development of funded National Respiratory Strategies through National Respiratory Coalitions. With an initial focus on European countries, the IRC began to onboard national-level coalitions – the invested organisations and individuals from each country to carry this work forward. Like the IRC itself, these national-level groups are made up of multisectoral stakeholders. The IRC supports these national-level coalitions by providing them with tools and resources to support their work – including access to grants and project funding. We now have 19 active coalitions – all at varying stages. Some coalitions, already have national strategies in place, whereas others do not. One of the major principles of this initiative is that by bringing countries together, countries can learn from one another and progress with other people’s successes and failures in mind. Communication is an important element of this project, both in terms of building the profile of the IRC (to engage people to be involved and support the project), promoting resources, and providing national-level coalitions with communications tools and resources to help them achieve their goals and communicate about their work.
