MSF INTERNATIONAL
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.
MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 24 sections, 27 associations and other offices together. Registered in Switzerland, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF movement, as well as implements international projects and initiatives as requested.
POSITION BACKGROUND
Recently, the MSF representative platforms of all Directors of Fundraising and Communications tasked the International Office with creating an International Digital Engagement Unit (IDEU). This unit provides consolidated expert support for MSF’s digital community. This need emerged from a comprehensive survey and internal assessment, which especially highlighted the necessity for stronger support in knowledge management and the enhancement of digital skills.
As MSF increasingly relies on online channels and digital engagement strategies to achieve institutional objectives—such as communications and fundraising—the organisation has seen a growing demand for professionals with digital skillsets and digital capacity. The
International Digital Knowledge & Capacity Building Advisor will contribute to a transformative approach to advancing MSF’s digitalisation through engaging with the MSF digital community and by targeting groups within the broader communication and fundraising communities. This will be accomplished in close collaboration with the International Communications & Knowledge Management Advisor and the International Capacity Building Fundraising Team.
Place in the organisation
The International Digital Knowledge & Capacity Building Advisor will be a member of the IDEU in the International Communications Department, within the MSF International Office.
This team reports directly to the International Communications Coordinator and functionally to the International Fundraising Coordinator. The unit is made up of 6 people working in different areas of digital expertise and based in different MSF offices.
The IDEU works closely with various working groups and task forces within MSF’s digital community to support communications and fundraising. In particular, this role will collaborate closely with the International Capacity Building Fundraising Team, International Communications & Knowledge Management Advisor as well as all staff members of IDEU.
The International Digital Knowledge & Capacity Building Advisor manager will report to the Head of the International Digital Engagement Unit.
Objective of the position
The International Digital Knowledge & Capacity Building Advisor manager will lead and enhance our organisation’s digital capabilities to achieve institutional objectives in communications and fundraising. This role develops and implements the global knowledge and management and digital skills building strategy for MSF’s digital specialists by identifying and leveraging collective knowledge. This role will ensure digital activities are developed in support and in alignment with other key stakeholders of domains to maintain consistency and improve mutualisation.
They will focus on strengthening digital literacy and skills within MSF’s digital community while driving digital maturity across the fundraising and communication communities as secondary objective.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead Learning and Development strategy and planning
* Determine MSF global digital knowledge and skills priorities by identifying knowledge gaps in the digital community for the successful implementation of MSF’s global communication and fundraising priorities.
* Design and implement MSF global digital knowledge and skills building strategy and annual plans according to the priorities identified.
* Oversee and maintain the ongoing skills assessment for the digital community (>1000 individuals), ensuring it is conducted in phases and sustained over time.
* Identify skill gaps within the digital community and develop programmes to meet evolving needs, with a focus on enhancing digital literacy and capacity.
* Design and implement customised learning experiences, including training sessions, webinars, and e-learning modules.
* Collaborate with subject matter experts, members of the IDEU, and other key internal stakeholders to create relevant content that fosters continuous learning and growth.
* Partner with knowledge resource providers to select and curate a diverse range of online courses.
* Foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration within the digital community.
2. Foster true learning and lively communities of practice
* Develop a strategy for establishing the Community of Practice (Co P) within the digital community, ensuring alignment with similar groups in fundraising and potentially communications.
* Identify, guide, and support senior members of the Digital Co P in their leadership roles.
* Coordinate and implement activities linked to peer advice and support.
* Select the most suitable digital platforms and tools to facilitate effective interaction within the digital community and Co P.
* Lead initiatives that enhance the sense of community and encourage knowledge sharing within MSF’s digital ecosystem.
* Monitor and community manage daily activity on Teams channels, responding to users and connecting them to appropriate colleagues within the organisation.
* Identify best practices, common needs, or key discussions through conversations, and disseminate these insights via webinars or other appropriate methods.
* Organise online events and forums to promote interaction and networking among digital professionals.
* Participate to in person learning events when necessary
* Develop a staff journey to improve induction processes and foster a sense of belonging within the digital community.
3. Lead and implement Knowledge Management Strategy
* Develop and implement strategies for effective knowledge management within the digital community.
* Lead and implement projects for developing and improving the internal digital information centre including specific needs for several working groups and communities of practice (such as operational communications, online fundraising, and human resources).
* Build a system of knowledge that ensures connection with related Share Point sites and knowledge management tools already in use by the communications and fundraising communities.
* Curate, document, and share best practices, resources, and tools to ensure easy access to relevant digital knowledge with internal stakeholders.
* Develop tools and promotional activities to enhance access to digital knowledge (potentially a newsletter or other method as fits) .
* Implement quality assurance and performance monitoring systems.
4. Enhance digital literacy across departments:
* Lead efforts to elevate digital literacy within the fundraising and communications departments.
* Develop targeted training programmes for different roles and levels of decision-makers to enhance their digital skills and understanding.
* Provide strategic guidance to integrate digital skills, tools and practices into existing processes, ensuring the departments are aligned with digital trends.
5. Development of an Evaluation System
- Establish a system to evaluate the contribution of the position to the Digital Communication and Fundraising communities
- Develop KPI dashboards and execute regular monitoring, proposing corrective measures when goals are not met.
6. Other
- Potentially contribute to the out of hours team on-call rotation for social media listening or publishing to website and social media.
- On occasion, take on other responsibilities in agreement with supervisor.
Job requirements
* Bachelor Degree in a relevant area (e.g. digital media, social studies, communications, economics, marketing, etc.)
* More than 6 years of proven experience in digital position, digital literacy, or similar roles.
* Strong background in community development, capacity building, knowledge management and adult learning principles.
* Ability to network and with a capacity to work effectively in a multicultural environment, across departments, and engage with stakeholders at various levels.
* Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills.
* Experience in developing and implementing training programmes.
* Strong project management and organisational skills.
* Growth and innovation mind-set, with a willingness and ability to lead by example.
* MSF experience in fundraising and or communication is an asset.
* Very good spoken and written English.
* Strong self-leadership abilities and a proactive can-do spirit.
* IT skills including Microsoft Office applications (Sharepoint, Teams, Viva Engage)
