Cryogenic Electro-Optic Design and Measurement Internship
(6 to 12 months)
Do you have the urge to work with cutting-edge quantum devices and build and measure systems with your own two hands? Would you like to contribute to the next generation of integrated photonics, optoelectronics, and superconducting circuits? Do you want to join a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced start-up environment? If so, our new internship position at Miraex might be for you.
Company Description
Miraex develops, manufactures, and offers cutting-edge ultra-high-precision photonics and optoelectronic quantum solutions for next-generation sensing, networking, and computing. We are located in the city of Lausanne, Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva, offering an incredible quality of life.
Job Description
Miraex is looking for an intern focused on the design and measurement of superconducting electro-optic devices to join our team and help us develop new integrated photonic devices. We are looking for someone with a passion for electro-optical technology and previous experience in laboratory research environments.
This internship will give you experience in a small and horizontal R&D team, where every voice is heard and each new challenge is an opportunity to learn something new. You will gain experience in design, modeling, assembly, and measurement of electro-optic devices. You will design superconducting and electrical circuits on chips and PCBs, model their performance through calculations and simulations, and produce the components required to make devices and experiments function. You will manage complex cryogenic experiments prototyping superconducting and electro-optic circuits while being mentored by our team with decades of lab experience in such measurements.
Details:
Duration: 6 to 12 months
Activity rate: 80–100%
Place of work: on-site (Ecublens, VD)
Mandatory Skills:
Experience in a lab environment.
Basic knowledge of RF/microwave components, electrical circuits, and instruments used to characterize them (e.g., vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes).
Rigor and care in experiment design and execution.
Interest and initiative to learn new skills.
Computational thinking and automation in Python or other scientific programming languages.
Communication and documentation skills (written/oral) in English.
Skills That Will Make the Difference:
Experience working with cryogenic vacuum systems.
Experience theoretically studying, designing, and/or measuring superconducting circuits or materials.
Experience with simulation software for high-frequency electrical and/or optical systems.
Work in quantum optics theory and/or electromagnetic simulation coupled to experiment.
Experience working with fiber optic, integrated photonic, electro-optic, and/or optical components, systems, and circuits.
A hands-on mindset.
Our Offer:
Being part of a fast-growing investor-backed company active in the fields of Quantum Computing, Sensing, and Networking.
Internship stipend related to level of study/work experience.
A team that has a strong footprint in two worlds: advanced research projects as well as hands-on development of applied products, where you have exciting possibilities to put your knowledge into practice.
Highly attractive working environment, in EPFL Innovation Park adjacent to the EPFL campus and at the heart of the Lake Geneva region in Switzerland.
Internships are available to those with work/resident permits for Switzerland, or EU citizens (limited exceptions may apply). Shorter internship durations may be available under limited circumstances.
If you are interested and think you would be a good fit for our team, please send your application (CV, cover letter, and optionally any supporting information you think will help our evaluation such as links to your published academic works, theses, reference letters, etc.) to careers@miraex.com and mention the title of the job position. We can’t wait to invite you for a (virtual) coffee!
