Project background
This pilot project Accelerating the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals in Swiss design education: Design Action Labs explores how Swiss design schools serve their local communities and design education's potential to accelerate the pursuit of the SDGs. By investigating real-life classroom approaches, pedagogical innovations, and community interventions, the project aims to enhance design programs' contributions to sustainability. Design Research help to explore how to advance the transition towards clean energy, sustainable cities and responsible consumption and production, among others.
Job description
Within this doctoral fellowship program, the candidate proposes pursues an independent PhD project related to advancing sustainable design education. The candidate conducts research to advance sustainable practices in design education. Together with the project team, and working on an innovative project focused on the Design Action Labs, the candidate investigates and designs strategies to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into Swiss design schools. The candidate has regular opportunities to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, participate in workshops, conferences, and networking events, and engage with a community of practice. The candidate's primary office will be within the project's research team, Competence Centre Design & Management, at HSLU Emmenbrücke Lucerne. The project will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Guillermina Noël, in collaboration with a supervisor from a research university selected by the candidate.
- Pursue an independent project (to be proposed by the candidate) related to advancing sustainable design education.
- Collaborate with the research team in data collection, applying methods such as cultural probes, scenario mapping, and semi-structured interviews. Contribute to data analysis, assisting in interpreting results and contextualizing findings for reports and publications.
- Leads Work Packages and data collection processes. Organize and prepare materials for workshops and conferences related to project objectives, supporting active dissemination of findings.
- Engage in regular training sessions to advance research skills and methods, aligning with both the project's goals and personal development.
Your profile
- Holds a master's degree in a design-related discipline.
- Demonstrates strong organizational skills, capable of managing timelines and handling multiple research activities across work packages.
- Has experience in qualitative research, especially with participatory action research, and is proficient in design research methodologies.
- Exhibits a collaborative mindset, able to work effectively with supervisors and interdisciplinary research teams.
- Displays a refined perceptual sensitivity approaching complex data with rigor that reveals patterns and insights, allowing for a coherent synthesis grounded in lived experience and relational understanding
- Enthusiastic about the Sustainable Development Goals and committed to advancing design education practices that support sustainability and community development.
